Purpose of the flight and payload description

This flight of a Micro High-Altitude Balloon (Micro-HAB) was part of two multinational military exercises: the U.S.-led Sword 26 and the Swedish national exercise Aurora 26 conducted during May 2026. Operations took place at Kosta Air Base, in the Småland region of Sweden by U.S. Army personnel assigned to Multi-Domain Command - Europe (MDC-E).

In the image at left we can see one balloon and its payload before launch (click to enlarge). Micro High-Altitude Balloons (Micro-HABs) are zero-pressure stratospheric balloons designed to operate between approximately 60,000 and 70,000 feet altitude. At that altitude band, conventional powered aircraft cannot operate, making balloons and ultra-light solar-powered vehicles the only viable options. Compared to larger HAB variants, Micro-HABs are defined by a total system weighting very few pounds. This reduced mass makes them man-portable, suitable for launch from field conditions, and less logistically demanding than their larger counterparts. The trade-off is payload capacity: the smaller envelope constrains the size and weight of carried sensors, limiting integration to small, light electronic intelligence (ELINT), communications intelligence (COMINT), and radar payloads. The primary intended mission set is ISR -specifically, deep sensing inside adversary territory- as well as communications relay.

The exercise represented an opportunity for U.S. forces to test procedures for deploying high-altitude balloon platforms in a European operational environment, coordinating in real time with Swedish authorities and NATO allies across the Baltic region. The experimental nature of the activity, noting that understanding how these platforms perform in practice is essential to assessing their potential contribution to future regional security operations.
